Barry Silver was born and raised in New York City and has been studying and practicing yoga and meditation since 1996, when he spent nine months at the Siddha Yoga Ashram in South Fallsburg, New York. In 1998, he took the Masters Touch courses taught by the late Yogi Bhajan and was authorized to teach Kundalini Yoga. In 2000, he started practicing Ashtanga Yoga with Eddie Stern at Ashtanga Yoga New York and took his first trip to India to practice with Sri Krishna Pattabhi Jois at the Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute. He received the blessing to teach and was authorized by AYRI in 2003. From 2003 to 2007, he assisted Eddie Stern at AYNY.
Since 2000, Barry has taken numerous trips to India to continue his practice with the Jois family, study the Indian Yoga tradition, and enjoy the beautiful culture. He co-hosted the Namarupa Maha Yatra in 2009, teaching yoga asana and guiding a group of thirty yogis on a tour of temples, sacred sites of India, and the Himalayas.
From 2007 to present he has been teaching daily Mysore style Ashtanga Yoga classes at Ashtanga Yoyogi in Yoyogi Uehara, Tokyo. He also travels around Japan to teach workshops and give lectures on asana, yoga philosophy, and mythology.

He has studied Ayurveda, Bhakti Yoga, Bhagavad Gita, and Yoga Sutras with several teachers: Dr. Robert Svoboda, Professor Nagaraja Rao, Dr. M. A. Jayashree, Sham Ranganatham, Robert Moses, and Kaustubha Das.
Barry is also an artist and designer with past gallery shows in New York and Tokyo. He designed and constructed temples and altars for the Broome Street Temple in New York City. In 2010, he started GBSK, a line of T-Shirts with his original designs inspired by the numerous gods and goddesses of India—with a contemporary and abstract twist.
